For Or Against - Space Exploration

Hello guys, here is my reading task for this week. 

Me and a partner read a book called Space Exploration and the book was kind of like a debate. One side of the debate is talking about how exploring space is a waste of money and they think that we should spend that money on medicine and looking for cures.

But then the other side of the debate said that they think that exploring space is needed and they also believe that one day it will save the world.

Goals: Use knowledge from text to combine with new ideas (own and others) to come up with new thinking

Make connections between other texts and general knowledge to expand meaning and pose questions, using more sophisticated texts.

Here is our opinion:

Relationships with other texts:

I have found that usually debates like this have rhetorical questions. I’ve also found that the good arguments point out not only the bad things about the other side but the what people can benefit from their own.

My new thinking:

I think that when you are writing something like a speech or debate you need something to make the listener/reader think and that’s why you would want to put in some hard hitting rhetorical questions.

Robots - Reading Task

Kia Ora everybody, welcome back to my blog.

This time we were reading a book called Humans - An endangered species.

For our task we had to make a screencastify (With a buddy) about our real life connections towards the text and our opinion on what the author was trying to say.

Reading Task - Fantastics

Hello everyone, I'm back.

For the first week of this term we have been learning about the fantastic's. It's basically what you would look for in books and your own writing.
They make you more aware about the senses and things while your writing a story.

For this task we had a slide with the story of little red riding hood and we had to find sentences that included the fantastic's such as:

With a smile and a swing of her cape. She skipped energetically through the dense undergrowth of the woodland.

Reading 1-2-3 Task

Hey everybody.

For my reading task for this week the teachers gave us something a little bit different.
I call it he 1-2-3 task.
First we had four different articles to choose out of, I chose one about the Arts and Music in primary school.
The author is basically saying that the Arts and Music should be more embraced for younger children and in their schools. The author knows that some kids may struggle with the usual curricular but find that music really helps them with concentration and just learning in general.

To do this task we had to do 3 Questions, 2 Proven facts and 1 opinion of our own.
So it's basically called the 3-2-1 challenge aha.

Because it's a bit hard to read I'll give you a little snippet of each number:

Q2) Do you think that the Arts and Music should be given the same amount of time as the other main curriculars such as maths and reading, or are you just saying that schools should embrace them more?

Fact 1) Playing an instrument benefits creativity, spatial-temporal ability, IQ scores and reading and language. It can also improve motivation and behaviour for secondary school children.

Research: From the website on the link below it tells you all the benefits from playing and instrument and even listening to music. It says it can help your concentration skills, mental skill ect.

Opinion 1)

In my opinion, I mainly agree with this author, and although I know that lot’s of kids don’t enjoy the arts or feel like their not good enough, others need that encouragement to keep going in life.

I think it would be good to step it up a notch and make it a more important thing in kids curricular.

Goal: Use questions to challenge the text, question the author, establish the authenticity of the text and state opinions.

Reading - Lest We Forget - Anzac

Hi guys and welcome to my first blog for the week.

For this week I had two goals and here they are:

1) Identify at least one important idea and justify why it is important.

2) Identify some text events and features, and discuss what they make the reader think about.

We had four different texts to choose from, although two were for level 3 readers and two were for level  4. 

I decided to choose one from level four and the book I read was called Lest we forget. It's a story about Anzac day and I learnt about different men's experiences during/after the war, it was probably one of the most interesting Anzac books I've ever read.

Anyway, I had a few different tasks to choose from and templates to use but I chose this one. I chose this not only because I liked it but because I could put in my own thoughts on parts of the texts.

Reading - Fake news

Hi guys, here's my reading task for this week.

So we have been learning about false news, we did some fun courses on line and looked at some pictures that made us choose whether they were real or false pictures.

Then we watched some videos and read some books that all relate to teaching us to know whether or not a website has true information.

Next we had to make an infographic about everything we learnt.

Reading - Making Connections

Hello everybody.

For this weeks reading task my goal was:

Making connections between texts, using more sophisticated texts.

To complete this goal we had to pick two stories from the selection of around nine that were given. After that we were just told to lightly skim across the words and just pick up the sentences that you need to answer the question.

We did this because we didn't want to spend our whole time reading two full stories when really we only need a couple of sentences.

Literacy Task #1

Hearing about this and learning about this is really sad because every human has a right to speak and be heard.

Reading Task #7

Kia ora everybody, welcome to my blog.

This time I am going to talk to you about one of my reading tasks for this term.

Our goal was:

How can we use a range of strategies, such as inferring, to work out more complex words?

Here is my follow up:

How to make inferences

Read the excerpts and write your inferences in the box below. Think about . . . • Who the character might be (old, young, sporty, brainy etc) • What kind of person the character is (kind, thoughtful, nasty, selfish, etc) • How the character is feeling at that moment and why • Where and when this action is taking place

Tom clenched his fists until the knuckles were white. He sighed deeply, stood up and stormed toward the door without saying another word. He opened the door and slammed it behind him. His ten teammates sat staring at each other in stunned silence.

I feel like something tragic may have happened to Tom during the past of this story that made him mad but now he is trying to calm himself down and stop himself from doing something nasty. I think he withheld his anger because he didn’t want to make it a big deal and instead walked out of the room. I feel like he was the so called leader of the pack and his teammates feel too intimidated by him to talk. He also could have just lost his game or he may have even just been put as a reserve and again he is trying to withhold his anger.

Hannah’s eyes grew as big as saucers and she began to clap her tiny hands together. As soon as the present was within reach, she grabbed it and began ripping off the paper. She was giggling and squealing with delight.

I think that in the past of this story that Hannah was desperate to have something or buy something and now she got a present that she thinks is shaped as what she wanted. It could be her birthday, it could be Christmas or even she may have just had done something that was extraordinary and gotten a reward.

Fred hobbled toward the counter. He reached into his pocket and with a shaking hand pulled out his old leather wallet. As he got his money out, he noticed the picture of his wife Molly. All of a sudden his eyes became sad and after paying for his chocolate he quickly put his wallet back into his pocket. Thanking the shop assistant he left the shop and headed home for a lonely night in front of the television.

I think that his wife may have passed away in the past and now he is missing her. Or another idea is that he may have just gone  through a divorce or something sad like that. He seems like he is an old man because they said he hobbled over to the counter. I think the setting is in a dairy. He also would have been feeling very sad at the time because they said his eyes became sad.
